Golden Sprinting
Team BEER came through this year on the Golden sprinting extravaganza help at the Michael’s of Bicycles in the Sacramento sector in hte boys and girls categories. Hellza!!!
Seems like the word got out that last year was dope and 2009 would be even doper as throngs of people congested the shops main dance floor. (Only a few danced, but they shook it.) The second reminder that there were hellza ppl the real tim clock. We didn’t finish until 12:00. That’s late in my book. Whatever.
They placed real gearing onthe bikes this year, which was a nice change from the junior 47×18 gearing of 2008. This year we had a meaty 52×12. That’s pretty huge gear, but once you put the bikes on fork stands and remove the control element, you need something thick to mash around at 180+ rpm. Rumor has it the red bike had a 52×11, but I only has 10 fingers. How to count that high is beyond me, so it was never proved, disproved. The fast bike of the night ended up being the yella bike anyway.
Last year the fastest time of the night was 19.4 segundos, 500m distance set by yours truly, only to be followed by Sage and Cody. Us three amigos were also the only ones to go under 20 seconds the entire night. So when we saw Sanke get up there and rock a 17.2sec run, our jaws hit the floor. We were is disbelief. NO WAY BRO! THEY MUST HAVE CHANGED THE GEARING! DANNNNGGGG!!!
The gearing change was true as Sage knocked the pedals around for a 17.4 run, 17.7 for my self, and 18.??for Cody. We were feeling ok at this point.
We started watching the girls race, an saw Emily duke it out with Sarah for the fastest times of the night too. They were smoking it in the very low 20’s. It was hard to keep track of the times for the ladies as there were races so close they had to be decided with a BEER sprint. It’s the only fair way to decide, even tough the timing is accurate 0.001seconds. Lizzy can guzzle the BEERS like a champ. It’s a good thing she wore the skinny suit, cause she was in total racing form. From guzzle to sprint it was no problem for the ladies.
Hours pass, and the boys get to ride again. Snake get’s up there and does his thing for a 16.8. WTF?? People go faster ont heir second ride, but come on. The doods rpms were spiking at 200. Shaiza!
I figured no way anyone would beat that considering no one beat the 17.2 mark all night. No one even came close. Well I got my chance. I walked up, didn;t think about it, got strapped in, and heard 3,2,1 go.
Everything went quiet.
I held my breath and just let the legs go around as long as I could hold my breath. It felt relaxed, controlled, and smooth. Then I stated to try and catch my breath, and they called the race. I turned around to see where I had finished. The heat was mine with a 16.1. WTF? No way. I truly could not believe it.
5 minutes later a guy from the UC davis team got up there and rocked a 16.05 it was crazy.
The night ended with a final bout between Davis, Snake, me, and Wayne who had been DJing all night. People wer flashing money, making bets, calling out cheers for their boys, but I had a feeling about Wayne.
Wayne kicked all o our asses. The three so called fasties couldn’t break into the 16 second mark. But Wayne sure did. Freakin’ dark horse.
Team BEER walked away with some cool prizes. Especially Emily. She won the coin toss for a Cannodale Capo. Dope!!!
